PHASE ONE
LAYOUT DESIGN BASICS
Page layout is the part of graphic design that deals in the arrangement and style treatment of elements on a page. Combine photography, typography and graphical elements on specific types of layouts to communicate a focused message.
Layouts
1 page vs. Spreads 1 page - Generally known by size of paper at 8” x 11” Spreads - Designed across more than one page. Generally 2 pages in length but can be extended beyond. |
The example is demonstrated in the headline "The Last Ride". The designer used selective word emphasis to give each word it's own character.
|
Typography
Type Design vs. Type as Graphics Type design - Type that designed to fit a form or arranged to generally be read. Type as Graphics - Type that is designed to become a shape or icon. |
The example is demonstrated in the heart graphic. It replaces the actual word "heart".
|
The example is made here in the picture with the footballs. The designer added the dates of the championships to add information that wasn't included in the photo.
|
Graphical
Elements vs. Crops/Cut-outs Elements - digitally created in photoshop or illustrator to accent/emphasize the design. Crops/Cut-outs - Taken with camera and manipulated in Photoshop to accent or emphasize the design. |
The example is demonstrated with the student council flying in the air. They were cut out of another photo and placed on the sky background.
